The first torpedo in the world was made in Rijeka. It was designed by Ivan Lupis, an officer of the Austro-Hungarian Navy from Rijeka, and Robert Whitehead, an English engineer. It was manufactured in 1866 at the “Torpedo Factory Whitehead and Co. Fiume”. Ivan Lupis received a peerage “von Rammer” (the sinker) for his achievements, and Rijeka’s torpedo became a standard part of the armament of all the navies of the developed world.

The strongest regional supercomputer BURA is located at the University of Rijeka and is among the 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world. It is used for research in biomedicine and biotechnology, and aside from scientists and students of the University, Bura will also be used by international institutions and companies.

The supercomputer was named after a cold and dry katabatic wind – the Bura/Bora – which often blows in Rijeka and is one of the strongest winds in the northern part of the Eastern Adriatic coast.
